Some Small Changes

It's been exciting receiving the beautiful jazz inspired artwork from the members of the Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association.  The show is going to be great!  Here are some changes from the previous blog page:

  • July 10:  The public is invited to the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles from 11 AM until 3 PM.  There is a private reception that starts at 3 PM for the artists and their immediate families in conjunction with the contributors to Wedding Dress:  Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.  The San Jose Jazz U19's will perform and light refreshments will be served.
  • August 5:  The performers will be the San Jose Jazz U19's.
There will be a free walk-through of these exhibits for SCVQA members July 21 at 1 PM.

Jazz Impressions, Next Steps

The review of the 45 art pieces received by the Jazz Impressions organizers is concluding and all artists will be notified of the acceptance of their artwork around June 1, 2016.  Here is what comes next:

  • June 1:  you will get an e-mail acceptance of your piece(s).  There will be an attachment to the e-mail with information about dropping your items off at a quilt depot along with a receipt to fill out before you visit the depot.
  • June 16 - 24:  call a quilt depot to make an appointment to drop your artwork off.  You must make an appointment; no drop-ins without appointments will be accepted.  If you are selling your art piece, be sure to bring your Artist Consignment Contract to the quilt depot.  Depot locations:

  • July 10:  
              1-2  PM: Opening walk through, museum members and artists are encouraged to attend.                       Each artist may bring one guest.
              2-4 PM: free public opening with reception.
              2-3 PM: High School Jazz Allstars perform.
  • August 5:  First Friday.  The quilt museum as well as museums and galleries nearby are free and open late.  http://www.southfirstfridays.com.  7-8 PM: High School Jazz Allstars will play.
  • August 12 to 14:  Jazz Festival in Downtown San Jose.  Jazz Festival attendees wearing their wristbands get free admission to the quilt museum during this time.
  • August 24 to 31:  Pick you quilt up, if you didn't sell it, at your depot or at the SCVQA meeting on September 29, 2016.  You must make arrangements in advance to visit your quilt depot.

Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association Presents Jazz Impressions

Introduction

The Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association, (SCVQA) invites its members to enter a juried exhibition, 'Jazz Impressions' at the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles, (SJMQ&T) July 8th to August 14th, 2016.

The Jazz Impressions show seeks innovative fiber arts that express a visual reaction to jazz.  Fiber material, both traditional and innovative with any embellishments is encouraged.  A reception on July 10th, 2016 will include an artist walk-through.

The Jazz Impressions show will be open during the annual San Jose Jazz Festival.  Over the last 27 years, the San Jose Jazz Festival has grown to 40,000 attendants.  It features an array of international Jazz performers and with 12 stages, transforms downtown San Jose into a music destination.  The 2016 festival will run August 12 - 14.

SCVQA members started SJMQ&T 38 years ago.  This local jewel hosts historical and contemporary exhibits, provides educational outreach and conducts lectures and classes.  18,000 people visit annually.

Eligibility

  • All current members of SCVQA are invited to submit entries.  Membership information is available at scvqa.org.
  • The non-refundable entry fee is $30 for up to three works of art, maximum.
  • Quilts made of any material or fiber techniques are eligible.
  • Quilts must be less than 200" perimeter, width less than 50" and less than 12" out from wall when hanging.
  • Freestanding art is accepted.  This includes garments.
  • No electrical connections will be available.
  • Quilts must be ready to hang with 4" sleeves.  Here are instructions to make sleeves:  http://www.scvqa.org/patterns.php
  • Artwork must be labeled on the back with the maker's name and the title of the piece.
  • Sale of artwork is encouraged.  50% of the price will go to the museum.  
  • Consignment forms for each piece must be completed at delivery.  If marked 'not for sale', please include value of work for insurance purposes.
  • SJMQ&T will handle sales transactions while works are on exhibit.  
  • Artwork must remain as SJMQ&T for the duration of the show.
Entry Procedure
  • Submission of your art is in two steps:
  • Receive your submission numbers and directions when you pay the $30 entry fee.  Pay at the March 21 or April 25 SCVQA general meetings or mail in check and receive number(s) by e-mail.  Checks should be made out to San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles and mailed to Martine Yingling, 687 Bicknell Road, Los Gatos, CA 95030.
  • Consideration is by digital images only.  E-mail one overall image and one detail image for each work submitted to scvqajazz@gmail.com.  Each art piece submission needs a separate submission number.  JPEGs only, no smaller than 1920 pixels on the longest side.  If you are having problems with the photograph manipulation, please call Sue Bianchi at (408)799-7386 for guidance.
  • Send one e-mail per quilt to scvqajazz@gmail.com containing this information:
               A,  Put the number of the entry in the subject line of the e-mail
               B.  Attach both digital images to the e-mail
               C.  In the body of the e-mail state
                    a.  The assigned number, the same as the subject line
                    b.  The name of your piece
                    c.  Dimensions of your work in inches, (height, width or other, if you quilt is not a            rectangle
                    d.  A brief description of the techniques and materials used in your artwork, less than
                        75 words.  It will be displayed with your art piece.
                    e.  The value of your quilt for insurance purposes.
                    f.  Is this your original design?  If not, do you have permission to use the design and did you properly credit the designer in your write-up?            
  • Submission must be complete by May 10, 2016. No exceptions.
  • You should receive a confirmation e-mail from scvqajazz@gmail.com within 24 hours of sending your information.  We will let you know if we need to know anything else.
Schedule of Deadlines

March 21 to May 10:  Pay entry fee and receive your submission number(s).  E-mail your photos.
June 1:  Notification of acceptance via e-mail.
